How to Choose a Nightstand That Works Beside Your Bed

A nightstand is a small piece of furniture with a very specific job. It holds the things you need within reach of the bed, supports lighting and helps keep the bedside area orderly. Its usefulness depends on height, surface area, storage and the relationship to the bed. A matching design is helpful, but it should come after those practical questions.

Begin by listing what actually stays beside you at night. Include the lamp base, glasses, book, water, charging equipment and any other regular item. Place them on an existing surface to see how much space they occupy. This is more revealing than choosing a nightstand by its width alone, because a large lamp can use much of a seemingly generous top.

Compare height with the finished mattress

Measure the top of the mattress after the bed is fully assembled with its intended support and bedding system. The headboard height does not determine the appropriate bedside surface. Try reaching to a surface at the proposed nightstand height while sitting and lying in your usual positions. Personal preference and the way you use the surface matter more than a universal rule.

The Brooklyn model 2473 nightstand is listed in the manufacturer catalog at 27 inches high, while the Concord model 2110 three-drawer nightstand is listed at 29.5 inches high. These are specific product examples, not interchangeable standards. Compare the selected model with your actual mattress height rather than assuming all coordinated nightstands sit at the same level.

Choose storage around access

A drawer can keep small items out of sight, while an open shelf may make a frequently used book or basket easier to reach. Several drawers can help separate items, but only if their usable dimensions suit those items. Consider whether you want to retrieve something without opening a door or drawer in the dark. The most attractive front arrangement may not match your preferred routine.

Measure any organizer or equipment that must fit inside. Exterior dimensions do not establish interior drawer space. If you need cable access, confirm whether the selected piece provides it; do not assume charging features, outlets or openings are included because other nightstands offer them. A pictured phone or lamp does not establish an electrical feature.

Check width and depth together

A nightstand may fit between the bed and wall but project too far into the route beside the bed. Mark its depth as well as its width. Include the baseboard, headboard posts and any angled parts of the frame that affect placement. Decide how close the piece can sit without interfering with the bed or the opening of its drawers.

If the bed has storage drawers, check those drawers in their fully usable position. A nightstand can block a drawer near the head of the bed even when both pieces come from a coordinated collection. Keep both footprints and operating areas on the same plan. Do not discover that conflict after choosing a storage configuration intended to save space.

Plan lighting as part of the surface

Choose the lamp position with the shade and base dimensions in mind. A shade can project beyond the top and interfere with a curtain, wall or person entering the bed. Test the placement before deciding how much usable surface remains. The height and location of the light should suit the way you read or move around the room.

Keep cords routed so they do not need to pass through a pinched gap or across a walking path. If wall-mounted lighting is planned, the nightstand may need less surface area, but installation and electrical details should be handled appropriately. Treat lighting as a related decision rather than an afterthought that consumes the space you chose for other items.

Decide how closely two sides should match

Two matching nightstands can create a settled appearance, but two users may have different storage needs or available space. Compare the functions on each side before insisting on identical dimensions. If different pieces are chosen, a repeated wood, finish or proportion can provide a visual connection without making the layouts identical.

Before ordering, review model, width, depth, height, drawer or door arrangement and any separate accessories. Mark the final placement on the floor and confirm that the bedside route remains comfortable. A well-chosen nightstand should feel naturally useful every night, with the right items close at hand and enough clear space for the way you use the bed.
