Garden Bridge Sizing: Measure the Span, Deck and Approaches

A garden bridge’s advertised length is not the same as the unsupported gap it can safely cross. To choose a size, you need the site opening, the model’s support requirements, its usable deck width and room for both approaches. Start with the landscape, then compare the exact bridge configuration.

Our garden bridge collection provides the product starting point; the intended use determines the questions to resolve.

Decide whether the bridge is decorative or functional

A bridge placed as a visual accent is a different project from one intended for people to cross. Confirm permitted use, rated capacity and installation requirements for the selected model. Rails in a photograph should not be assumed to provide fall protection.

For a crossing over water, a drop or difficult ground, have an appropriate professional assess the site and support plan before purchasing.

Measure the opening and support areas separately

Record the gap at the intended crossing and the available ground on each side. The total product length may include portions intended to rest on supports, so comparing it directly with the gap can give the wrong answer.

Do not assume that pond edging, loose stone or a landscaped bank provides the bearing surface a bridge requires. Match the specified support arrangement to the actual site conditions.

Find the usable width

Outside width may include rails, posts or trim. The clear deck width is the space available between those obstructions. Check the entrances too, where projecting parts can narrow the route.

If the intended route needs to accommodate equipment or a mobility device, obtain a professional assessment of width, slope, surface, capacity and protection. A decorative garden product should not be assumed suitable for that use.

Plan the paths at both ends

A bridge should connect to a usable approach. Sketch the path, nearby planting and any turn immediately before or after the deck. Consider how the ground meets the bridge and how drainage affects the area.

Use a hose or string to mark the footprint in the garden. Look at it from the house and walk the intended approach without crossing an uninstalled bridge. This helps you judge the composition and access before committing.

Send a complete sizing question

Include the product, intended use, measured opening, available support areas, desired clear width and photographs of both approaches. Those details make a product question much more answerable than “Will a ten-foot bridge fit?”

Contact Ecommersify for the model information, then coordinate the site plan with the appropriate installer. Review delivery details and the access needed to bring the components into the yard.
